Boat sales text message templates: 30 texts for marketplace leads, buyer questions, hand-offs and 90-day follow-up
By Keelson Intelligence · Updated · 13 min read
A good boat sales text answers the buyer's question in one 160-character message, names the dealership and the salesperson, and asks for one next step; the 30 templates below cover every stage from the first reply to a YachtWorld or Boat Trader lead to the opt-out acknowledgement. Copy them into your CRM or texting tool and fill the {braces} from the listing. Keelson sends messages like these in the dealership's name from its own number within 60 seconds of a lead, answering only from the inventory feed and passing financing and trade questions to a named salesperson.
Which boat sales text to send when: the 30 templates by stage and timing
Each template below belongs to one stage of a boat sale and one moment in it. The table is the map: find the stage your buyer is in, then jump to the section. Boat show texts are not in this library because show leads need their own sequence, covered in boat show lead follow-up, and sea trial confirmations, reminders and weather holds live on the sea trial scheduling guide.

Writing rules for dealership texts
A dealership text should read like a salesperson's short note about the boat, not a marketing blast. The rules below apply to every template on this page, and they are the edits most worth making before you load any text into your CRM.
- Length. Aim for one segment of 160 plain characters; emojis and some symbols switch the message to an encoding that holds 70 characters a segment, so a single smiley can turn one text into three.
- Identify the dealership. Name the store, and the salesperson where there is one, in the first text, because a buyer who sent five inquiries on a Saturday will not know who “Mike” is and carrier reviewers expect a clear program name (Twilio).
- STOP language on the first message. Put “Reply STOP to opt out” on the first text to every new lead and on every marketing alert; the reasons are set out in our texting compliance guide.
- Quiet hours. Schedule texts by the buyer's time zone inside the strictest window that applies, which is 8am to 8pm in Florida and Oregon, as detailed in the compliance guide.
- Answer first, then ask. If the buyer asked about the price, the first line is the price; the question comes after the answer, and there is only one question per text.
- Only numbers from the listing. Price, hours, length and trailer details come from the inventory feed; financing terms and trade values come from a person.
The answer-first rule matters because most dealer replies skip it. The DAS Technology study of 1,700 car dealership inquiries, presented in January 2025, found 74% of responses gave no price quote and 91% left out payment details (DAS Technology via AZ Tech Council). Text is also now the normal channel for those answers: Pied Piper's 2026 study found dealers used text to answer the buyer's question 54% of the time, up from 38% (Auto Remarketing). Boat buyers say the same thing in marine research: Rollick told MRAA in April 2024 that buyers favour quick email and text replies over phone calls (MRAA). For more on response speed, see the lead response statistics.
First reply to a YachtWorld, Boat Trader or website lead
The first text confirms the boat, proves a real dealership is replying, and asks one useful question. It should arrive while the buyer is still looking at the listing, which is why these five are written to send within a minute. How each marketplace delivers its leads is explained in our YachtWorld and Boat Trader lead guide.
1. YachtWorld listing inquiry
Hi {First name}, {Salesperson} at {Dealership}. Thanks for your YachtWorld inquiry on the {Year Make Model}. It's available and lying at {Location}. What would help most first: engine hours, survey history or the full spec sheet? Reply STOP to opt out.
2. Boat Trader lead with a question in the message
Hi {First name}, this is {Dealership} replying to your Boat Trader message about the {Model}. To your question: {Answer from the listing}. Would a walkaround video help, or would you rather see it in person? Reply STOP to opt out.
3. boats.com lead with no message
Hi {First name}, {Dealership} here about the {Model} you found on boats.com. So I send the right details: are you hoping to buy this season, or planning for next year? Reply STOP to opt out.
4. Website lead on a boat that is not in stock
Hi {First name}, thanks for your request on our website about the {Model}. We don't have one on the lot right now. {Salesperson} can check factory availability, and we have a {Similar model} here today. Want details on either? Reply STOP to opt out.
5. Meta or Google lead form
Hi {First name}, it's {Dealership}. You filled in our form about the {Model or offer}. I can send photos and pricing here by text or to {Email} if you'd rather. Which suits you? Reply STOP to opt out.
Answering availability, price and trailer questions, and handing off trade-ins and financing
Answer the five common listing questions from the inventory record; hand other money questions to a person. Buyers ask the same handful of questions on every boat: is it still there, what does it cost, what is the best price, does the trailer come with it, and how many hours are on the engines. Each has a short, factual answer that the listing already holds.
Availability, price, trailer and specs
6. Is it still available?
Yes, the {Model} (stock {Stock number}) is still here as of this morning. Want me to put a time on {Salesperson}'s calendar to go through it with you?
7. What's the price?
The {Model} is listed at {Listed price}, which includes {What the listing includes}. {Salesperson} can go through the full out-the-door figure with you. Prefer a call, or keep it to text?
8. What's your best price?
Fair question. Offers go through {Salesperson}, and they'll want to know if you're trading anything and when you'd take delivery. Shall I have them get in touch today?
9. Does it come with a trailer?
{Trailer answer from the listing, e.g. Yes, a {Trailer make} tandem-axle trailer is included}. If you need one, we also have {Trailer option} in stock. Do you already have a tow vehicle for it?
10. Engine hours and service history
The {Model} has {Engine} with {Hours} hours. {Service note from the listing}. Anything else on the spec list you'd like me to check?
Hand-offs to a salesperson
Trade values and financing terms should never be guessed in a text. Keelson does not appraise boats or quote finance; it passes those questions, with the conversation so far, to a named salesperson, and the templates below are written the same way for any team.
11. Trade-in mentioned
Thanks. {Salesperson} handles trades personally; we don't put a value on a boat by text. If you can send 4 or 5 photos and the engine hours of your {Trade boat}, they'll be in touch {today or tomorrow}.
12. Financing question
Good question. Rates and terms depend on your application, so {Finance contact} will go through them with you directly. Is this number fine for a call, and what time works?
13. A question only a person should answer
That one's best answered by {Salesperson}, who knows this boat inside out. I've passed on your question and our messages so far, and they'll reply here shortly.
14. Salesperson picks up the thread
Hi {First name}, {Salesperson} here, picking up our conversation about the {Model}. I've read the messages, so no need to repeat anything. {Answer or next question}
Re-engaging a boat lead that has gone quiet
A quiet lead needs a new reason to reply, not the same question asked again. Silence after the first exchange usually means the buyer is busy, comparing other dealers or waiting on a spouse, a bonus or the season. These five texts each change something: the effort asked of the buyer, the boat on offer or the calendar. Where they sit in a full 90-day plan is set out in the follow-up cadence guide.
15. No reply after the first exchange
Hi {First name}, {Salesperson} at {Dealership}. No rush on the {Model}; I just didn't want my last message to get buried. Is it still on your shortlist?
16. One easy question
Quick one, {First name}: will the boat mostly be for {Use 1} or {Use 2}? It'll help me point you to the right ones.
17. The boat they asked about sold
Hi {First name}, the {Original model} you asked about has sold. A {Alternative model} came in this week with {Key difference}. Want photos?
18. Launch season is close
Hi {First name}, launch on {Home water} is about {Weeks} weeks out. If you still want to be running this season, now's a good time to look at the {Model}. Still interested?
19. Polite last message
Hi {First name}, I haven't heard back, so I'll stop following up on the {Model}. If you start looking again, this number reaches me directly. Thanks, {Salesperson}
Price drop and new-inventory alerts
Alerts work when tied to what the buyer asked for, and they need stronger consent than replies. A price-drop or new-arrival text is marketing, and marketing texts sent through an automated platform generally need prior express written consent, which our compliance guide explains. Send these only to buyers who agreed to receive them, keep the dealership name at the start, and include opt-out wording every time.
20. Price drop on the boat they asked about
{Dealership}: the {Model} you asked about is now {New price}, down from {Old price}. Reply YES and {Salesperson} will hold a viewing time for you. Reply STOP to opt out.
21. New arrival that matches their criteria
{Dealership}: a {Year Make Model} just arrived that fits what you asked for ({Length}, {Use}, under {Budget}). Photos: {Link} Reply STOP to opt out.
22. Trade-in arrival before it is listed
{Dealership}: we just took a {Year Make Model} in on trade. It goes online {Date}. Want a first look before then? Reply STOP to opt out.
23. New model year in stock
{Dealership}: the {Model year} {Model} you asked about last season is now on our lot. Want the new spec sheet and pricing? Reply STOP to opt out.
After a showroom visit
The texts after a visit keep the details in front of the buyer while they talk it over at home. Most boat purchases involve more than one decision-maker and more than one visit, so these four focus on the information a buyer needs to share and on the next appointment. Once a sea trial is booked, switch to the confirmation and reminder texts on the sea trial scheduling guide.
24. Thanks for coming in
Thanks for coming in today, {First name}. Here are the {Model} details we went over: {Link}. Anything you'd like me to check before you decide?
25. Video to share at home
Hi {First name}, here's a short video of the {Model} to show anyone else who'll be deciding: {Video link}. Happy to set up a second visit for everyone.
26. Side-by-side after comparing two boats
Since you also looked at the {Other model} yesterday, here's a side-by-side of the two: {Comparison link}. Which way are you leaning?
27. Offer a sea trial
If you'd like to run the {Model} before deciding, {Salesperson} can take you out on {Water}. Which days in the next two weeks could work?
Opt-out acknowledgement and HELP reply
An opt-out reply should confirm the request in one line and then the dealership goes silent. Buyers opt out with keywords such as STOP, END, QUIT and UNSUBSCRIBE, and since 11 April 2025 they can also revoke in any reasonable wording (Kimoby; Mondaq). The HELP reply carries the program name, contact details, frequency and rates wording that carrier registration reviews expect to see (Twilio). Keelson honours opt-out keywords immediately and stops the follow-up sequence for that number.
28. STOP acknowledgement
{Dealership}: you're unsubscribed and won't get more texts from this number. Reply START if you change your mind.
29. Plain-language opt-out
Understood, {First name}. We've stopped all texts to this number. Thanks for letting us know. {Dealership}
30. HELP reply
{Dealership} sales messages. For help call {Phone} or email {Email}. Msg frequency varies. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out.
Load these three before any other template, test them from a personal phone, and confirm the opt-out reaches every system that can text that number, including salespeople's mobile apps. A dealer who would rather not run the templates by hand can have Keelson send them from the dealership's number, from $795 a month; plan details are on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best first text to send a Boat Trader lead?
Name your dealership, confirm the exact boat the buyer asked about, answer any question they typed in the form, and ask one easy question such as whether they plan to buy this season. Keep it near 160 characters and end with “Reply STOP to opt out”. Send it within a minute if you can, while the buyer is still looking at the listing and before other dealers reply.
What should I text when a buyer asks for the lowest price?
Do not negotiate by text and do not ignore the question. Say plainly that offers go through the salesperson, then ask the two things that shape any offer: whether there is a trade-in and when they would take delivery. Offer a call the same day. If the listed price is the answer, give it in the first line, since 74% of car dealer replies in a 2025 study gave no price at all.
How do I hand a text conversation to my salesperson?
Tell the buyer who is taking over and that they have read the thread, so the buyer never has to repeat themselves. The salesperson's first message should name themselves, mention the boat and carry on from the last question rather than start again. Trade values, financing terms and offers should always be handled this way, by a person, with the earlier messages in front of them.
What do I text a boat lead that stopped replying?
Change something each time instead of asking “still interested?” again. Lower the effort with one easy question, offer a different boat if theirs sold, use the local launch date as a deadline, and finish with a polite last message that leaves your number. Spread these over 45 to 90 days, inside quiet hours, and stop as soon as the buyer opts out or books.
Can I send price-drop texts to everyone who ever inquired?
Not safely. Price-drop and new-inventory alerts are marketing, and marketing texts sent through an automated platform generally need prior express written consent, which a marketplace inquiry alone may not provide. Send alerts only to buyers who agreed to receive them, start with the dealership name and include opt-out wording every time. Our texting compliance guide covers consent as general information, not legal advice.
Should boat sales texts include emojis or links?
Links to the listing, a video or a comparison are useful, because they answer questions faster than text can. Emojis cost more than they look: one emoji switches the message to an encoding that fits 70 characters a segment instead of 160, so a short text can bill as three. Keep emojis out of first replies and use the dealership name rather than a nickname.
